General description

Two positions are open for Ph.D. students at the Department of Wood Science at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. The successful applicants will contribute to the newly formed ‘Advanced Wood Building Systems Engineering Lab’ headed by Dr. Cristiano Loss. We are looking for skilled and highly motivated individuals to pursue a Ph.D. in Wood Building Design and Construction.

About the Department

The Department of Wood Science represents one of the three departments that comprise the Faculty of Forestry at the University of British Columbia. The University of British Columbia is a global center for research and teaching, consistently ranked about top 40 universities in the world and ranked among the top 20 public universities worldwide. The Vancouver Campus is located in the cosmopolitan city of Vancouver, Canada and offers a large number of outdoors activities, including aquatic sports and ski.

Research description

Successful candidates will carry out their research in one of the following subjects: i) Performance-based optimum seismic design methods and procedures for timber buildings, ii) Hybrid timber-based modular construction systems for prefabricated buildings, iii) Mass-timber-based systems for the next generation of tall timber buildings. Students will contribute to contemporary research topics that will have strong potential for practical applications. The outcomes are expected to contribute to the current and future building sector significantly, introducing new concepts for the building industry. Students will be prepared for qualified positions in academic or industrial fields at a later date.

Qualifications

Students who hold an M.Sc., M.A.Sc., M.Eng. or equivalent degree are encouraged to apply. The ideal candidates should have a solid background in timber engineering, mechanical engineering, and structural design, as well as good knowledge of finite element analysis (FEA), statistical data analysis, and testing methods. Knowledge of programming in C++/Python or other languages, or application programming interface coding will be considered an asset. Qualified students will be provided with full financial support and trained to perform independent research.

Research Assistantships

A four-year assistantship will be provided to the selected candidate, for a total Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA) package of $23,000/year 12-month-based stipend. There is also the possibility of additional funding through the Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA) program.
