Massimo Fragiacomo is Professor of Structural Engineering in the Department of Civil, Construction-Architectural & Environmental Engineering of University of L’Aquila, Italy since September 2015. Previous positions held include eight years at the University of Sassari, Italy as an Associate Professor from 2007 to 2015, three years as Senior Lecturer (equivalent to US Associate Professor) at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand from 2005 to 2007; Post-doc research fellow at the University of Trieste, Italy from 1999 to 2005; and Civil Engineer in the City Council of Trieste, Italy from 1994 to 1999.

 

He graduated cum summa laude in 1992 at the University of Trieste, Italy and was awarded a Ph.D. in Design and Preservation of Structures in 2001 in the same University.

 

He is an author of 460 papers published, 184 of which on peer reviewed international journals, and 3 patents, with h-index of 55, 45 and 41 according to the Google Scholar, Scopus e Web of Science data base, respectively, and 10787, 7094 and 5273 citations in the corresponding data bases. He was included in the List of the 150 Italian Top Scientists in the World in all the Engineering disciplines, in the World's Top 2% Scientists for the Civil Engineering Area by Stanford University, and in the Top Engineering and Technology Scientists in Italy, the list of the best 100 Italian scientists in the World in all the engineering and technology research fields.

 

He is recognized as one of the world experts on Earthquake Engineering and Timber Engineering, with special emphasis on Earthquake Resistance and Timber-Concrete Composite Structures. Additional expertise includes Structural Fire Engineering, Steel-Concrete Composite Structures, and Finite Element Modelling.

 

He is currently the Director of the Centre for Research and Education on Earthquake Engineering (CERFIS) at the University of L’Aquila, Italy. He was also Deputy Head of the Department of Civil, Construction-Architecture and Environmental Engineering, and Course Coordinator of the Bachelor and Master in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the same University.

 

He has been Principal Investigator in many research projects funded by regional, national and international Public and Private Agencies for a total amount of 1,800,000 Euro. For his research activity he has received several prizes including the Frederick Palmer Prize offered by the Institution of Civil Engineers – UK in 2012, and the Research Prize offered by the University of Sassari in 2008 and 2012.

 

He is member of the Editorial Boards of several International Journals including the Journal of Architectural Heritage, European Journal of Wood and Wood Products, Journal of Structural Fire Engineering. He is Associate Editor of the ASCE Journal of Structural Engineering, and Guest Editor of three special issues, including one on “Fire Safety of Timber Structures” of the Fire Safety Journal and one on “Structures Rehabilitation” of the Engineering Structures Journal.

 

He is member of CEN/TC250/SC5 “Eurocode 5: Design of Timber Structures” and CEN/TC250/SC8 “Eurocode 8: Design of structures for earthquake resistance” and the corresponding Italian mirror committees, as well as chairman of the Working Group CEN/TC250/SC8/WG3 “Seismic Design of Timber Structures”. He has been member of the Project Team PT5.2 which has prepared a first draft of a new Technical Specifications on Timber-Concrete Composites, and member of the Project Team PT8.2 which has prepared a revised version of the material-dependent part of the Eurocode 8-Part 1 on Structural Design for Earthquake Resistance.

 

He has been member of the Management Committee of several COST Actions, and Vice-chairman of COST Action FP1404 “Fire safe use of bio-based building products”.

 

He has organized and coordinated many professional upgrade courses on timber structures and earthquake design for architects and engineers, in Italy and New Zealand. He was also invited to offer seminars and lectures on timber construction and seismic design in Italy and abroad for the profession, Master and Doctoral courses.

 

He has taught Reinforced Concrete Design, Steel Construction and Timber Engineering at the faculties of Engineering and Architecture, in Italy and abroad. He has been the main supervisor and associate supervisor of 20+ Ph.D. students and 50+ Master Theses. He has been member of the panels for the final Ph.D. exam at University of Laval (Canada), ETH Zurich (Switzerland), Lulea University of Technology (Sweden), University of Bath (UK), University of Kassel (Germany), Imperial College of London (UK), University of New South Wales (Australia), University of Canterbury (New Zealand), Politecnico of Turin, University of Trento, Ancona, Padua, Roma La Sapienza and Camerino (Italy).

Massimo Fragiacomo è Professore Ordinario di Tecnica delle Costruzioni nel Dipartimento di Ingegneria Civile, Edile-Architettura e Ambientale dell’Università dell’Aquila dall’1 settembre 2015. 

Precedentemente è stato Professore Associato presso il Dipartimento di Architettura, Design e Urbanistica dell’Università di Sassari dal 2007 al 2015; Senior Lecturer (equivalente a Professore Associato) all’Università di Canterbury in Nuova Zelanda dal 2005 al 2007; Assegnista di Ricerca presso il Dipartimento di Ingegneria Civile dell’Università di Trieste dal 1999 al 2005; Esperto Ingegnere presso il Comune di Trieste dal 1994 al 1999. 

Si è laureato a pieni voti nel 1992 presso l’Università di Trieste ed ha conseguito il titolo di dottore di ricerca in Progetto e Conservazione di Strutture presso l’Università di Trieste nell’anno 2001. 

E’ autore di 460 articoli scientifici, 184 dei quali pubblicati su riviste internazionali soggette a revisione, e 3 brevetti, con indice di Hirsch (h-index) pari a 55, 45 e 41 secondo le banche dati Google Scholar, Scopus e Web of Science rispettivamente, e numero di citazioni pari a 10787, 7094 e 5273 secondo le stesse banche dati. E’ stato incluso nelle Liste dei 150 Migliori Scienziati Italiani nel mondo nelle diverse discipline dell’Ingegneria (Top Italian Scientists-Engineering), dei migliori (2%) Ricercatori mondiali in Ingegneria Civile dall’Universita’ di Stanford, e dei migliori 100 scienziati italiani del mondo nel campo dell’Ingegneria e della Tecnologia.

Le aree di ricerca comprendono l’Ingegneria del Legno e l’Ingegneria Sismica, per le quali è riconosciuto come uno dei maggiori esperti a livello mondiale; l’Ingegneria Antincendio, le Strutture Composte Legno-Calcestruzzo e Acciaio-Calcestruzzo, e la Modellazione di Strutture agli Elementi Finiti.

E’ Direttore del Centro di Ricerca e Formazione in Ingegneria Sismica (CERFIS) presso l’Universita’ degli Studi dell’Aquila. E’ anche stato Vice-Direttore del Dipartimento di Ingegneria Civile, Edile-Architettura e Ambientale, e Presidente dei Corsi di Studio Triennale in Ingegneria Civile e Ambientale, e Magistrale in Ingegneria Civile presso lo stesso Ateneo.

Ha ricevuto finanziamenti regionali, nazionali ed internazionali per un ammontare totale di 1.800.000 Euro. Per la sua attività di ricerca ha ricevuto vari premi tra cui il Frederick Palmer Prize assegnato dall’Institution of Civil Engineers – Inghilterra nell’anno 2012, ed i premi alla ricerca offerti dall’Università di Sassari negli anni 2008 e 2012.

Fa parte dei comitati editoriali di varie riviste internazionali tra cui il Journal of Architectural Heritage, European Journal of Wood and Wood Products, Journal of Structural Fire Engineering. E’ membro delle Commissioni Tecniche Europee sull’Eurocodice 5 “Strutture in Legno” ed Eurocodice 8 “Progettazione Antisismica di Strutture”, e delle corrispondenti Commissioni Nazionali, nonché coordinatore del Gruppo di Lavoro CEN/TC250/SC8/WG3 sulla Progettazione antisismica di strutture in legno. Ha fatto parte del Project Team PT5.2 che ha preparato la prima bozza di un nuovo Eurocodice sulle Strutture Composte Legno-Calcestruzzo, e del Project Team PT8.2 il cui compito è stato quello di preparare una versione aggiornata della parte sui materiali dell’Eurocodice 8-Parte 1 sulla progettazione delle strutture per le azioni sismiche.

Inoltre, ha partecipato ai comitati di gestione di varie COST Actions, in particolare come vice-direttore della COST Action FP1404 “Fire safe use of bio-based building products”.

Ha coordinato numerosi corsi di aggiornamento professionale per ingegneri ed architetti sulle strutture in legno anche in zona sismica, sia in Nuova Zelanda che in Italia, ed è stato invitato a tenere seminari e lezioni sull’argomento in Italia e all’estero sia per gli ordini professionali che per Master di secondo livello e scuole di dottorato.

Ha insegnato Tecnica delle Costruzioni, Teoria e Progetto delle Costruzioni in Acciaio, ed Ingegneria del Legno presso le facoltà di Ingegneria ed Architettura, in Italia e all’estero. E’ stato relatore e correlatore di più di venti studenti di dottorato di ricerca e di più di cinquanta Tesi di Laurea. E’ stato nominato membro delle commissioni esaminatrici di dottorato di ricerca dall’Universita’ di Laval (Canada), dall’ETH Zurigo (Svizzera), dalla Lulea University of Technology (Svezia), dall’Università di Bath (Inghilterra), dall’Università di Kassel (Germania), dall’Imperial College of London (Inghilterra). dall’Università di New South Wales (Australia), dall’Univesità di Canterbury (Nuova Zelanda), dal Politecnico di Torino e dalle Università di Trento, Ancona, Padova, Roma La Sapienza e Camerino (Italia).
