Stefano Sfarra was born in L'Aquila, Italy. He earned his degree in Environmental Sciences from University of L'Aquila - UNIVAQ (Italy) - Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Physics Sciences - in 2006, defending an experimental Thesis about the integrated use of infrared thermography and ground probing radar for the detection of discontinuities in buildings, with the aim of constituting the paper of risks of the artistic heritage of Abruzzo Region (Advisor Prof. Domenica Paoletti, co-Advisor: Prof. Marco Tallini).

In 2006 he also obtained an Occasional Performance Contract from the Department of Mechanical, Management and Energy Engineering (DIMEG), (presently DIIIE, Department of Industrial and Information Engineering and Economics) of the University of L'Aquila in order to gathering and systematizing the energetic consumptions and the performance requirements of buildings and companies of the Abruzzo Region with particular attention to Chieti city (Italy).

Therefore, in 2007 he took a regional scholarship for research activities and transfer of the results of the R&S, focusing the attention on a research titled "Development of methods for the evaluation of uncertainty measurement in specific applications for companies operating in the "automotive field", under the guidance of Prof. Domenica Paoletti (University of L'Aquila) and Presider S.r.l..

In April 2011 he earned his PhD in Mechanical, Management and Energy Engineering at the University of L'Aquila (Italy), while from October 2011 to October 2017 he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the same University.

Since October 2017 he is a fixed-term Researcher at DIIIE - UNIVAQ, while since January 2017 he is an associate technologist into group no. 5 at INFN - "Gran Sasso National Institute" (Italy).

His research interests include heat transfer, buildings physics, optical metrology, NDT&E, infrared thermography, numerical simulations, and digital image analysis. He is a member of  AIPnD (Associazione Italiana Prove non Distruttive Monitoraggio e Diagnostica) and AFTI (Associazione della Fisica Tecnica Italiana).

He chaired several congress sessions, and he was nominated member of twelve Scientific Committees of International Conferences focused on the issues above mentioned.

He was the Guest Editor of two Special Issues of International Journals:

1) (with D. Paoletti, and D. Ambrosini) "33rd UIT (Italian Union of Thermo-fluid dynamics) Heat transfer Conference", Journal of Physics: Conference Series vol. 655, October 2015.

2) (with D. Ambrosini) "Novel ideas for infrared thermography also applied in integrated approaches", Applied Sciences [IF: 1.769], ongoing.

He is/was a visiting/aggregate/invited Researcher at:

*Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Vision and Systems Laboratory (CVSL), Laval University, Québec City (QC) G1V 0A6, Canada

*INP - Institut National du Patrimoine - Paris - France

*Escola Superior de Conservacion e Restauracion de Bens Culturais de Galicia - Pontevedra - Spain
