Concettina Buccella was born in L’Aquila. She received the M.S. degree and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of L’Aquila, Italy, in 1988 and from the University of Rome“La Sapienza” in 2005, respectively. After graduation she was a research engineer at Italtel SpA, L’A-quila, then in 1991 she joined the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of L’Aquila,where she was an assistant professor and since 2001 she is Associate Professor of Electrotechnics.Her current research interests deal with smart grids, power converters modulation techniques,renewable energy management, analytical and numerical modeling, electromagnetic compatibility, inthe past dealt with controlled active shields, power line communications, models of biological systemswith particular attention to the human eye, applications of neural networks and wavelet transform.She authored more than 100 papers on international journals and on conference proceedings. Concettina Buccella is a Senior Member of the IEEE (Class 2003), a member of the Power Elec-tronics Committee and of the Smart Grids Committee of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society; formany years she was a member of the Electrostatic Process Committee of the IEEE Industry Applica-tions Society. She is a Member of the Committee for Education Rights at the University of L’Aquila.She was an evaluator of research projects, Ph.D. candidates and in promotions to Full Professor andto Associate Professor rank for several foreign institutions and universities. Concettina Buccella is a reviewer for many international journals, mostly IEEE Transactions, including TIE and TII. During 2006-2008 she was a lead member in development of “Centre of Advanced Training in the areas of Manufacturing and Services” (“Progetto POL_AF ”) a 4.5 million project funded by P.O.R. Abruzzo.
She was a member of the Organizing Committee and a teacher of the Post M.S. Master “Energy
Manager” at the Faculty of Engineering, University of L’Aquila. During 2009-2011, she was a Guest
Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics - Special Section on: “Methods and Systems
for Smart Grids Optimization” (published on October 2011). She has been a committee member, a
reviewers and a session chair in international conferences; currently a she is a Track Chair for “Power
Systems” at the 39-th Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IECON 2013,
November 10-13, 2013, Vienna, Austria) and a Technical Program Committee Member of the 2013
IEEE International Workshop on Intelligent Energy Systems “Managing the Complexity in Energy
Systems” (IWIES 2013, November 14, 2013, Vienna, Austria).
Concettina Buccella has been a Co-Founder of DigiPower Ltd., a University of L’Aquila spin-
off, founded in 2007 and operating in the field of industrial electronics, power systems, smart grids,
modeling, electromagnetic compatibility. Since 2012 she has been the C.E.O.
She is a co-recipient of the 2012 Best Paper Award of the IEEE Transaction Industry Information
for the paper: “Smart Grid Technologies: Communication Technologies and Standards”, IEEE Trans-
action on Industrial Informatics, Vol. 7, N. 4, pp. 529 - 539, Nov. 2011. (authors: V. C. Gungor, D.
