Part 1: This 1-hour seminar is intended for students who would like to discover (or have little knowledge)
about EMC in general, and/or for confirmed EMC engineers who would like to interest themselves in the
automotive industry. It will firstly begin by an introduction on the automotive external
electric/electromagnetic environment followed by the automotive EMC requirements and issues. This
introduction will also present the internal EMC environment of a vehicle and describe the generic
immunity and emission mechanisms of an electric/electronic system. Then the automotive context,
standards and regulations will be shortly presented. The industrial EMC design activities and issues with
then illustrated focusing on diƯerent mitigation techniques and EMC solutions applied in the
automotive industry.
Part 2: The second part of the seminar lasts 1 hour. This part will cover the numerical simulation aspects
by overviewing the diƯerent simulation tools generally used, by describing a typical vehicle EMC
modeling scheme, and by giving some examples of car body, harnesses and equipment modeling.
DiƯerent tests will be given as examples, and diƯerent test methods and facilities for immunity to
radiated electric fields will be summarily introduced. Finally, the seminar will end by some general
conclusions and a few words on future automotive EMC challenges.
